Chapter Fifteen
Adam wasnât sure who out of the two of them was most nervous. But unlike Lenny, he remained calmâat least on the outside. Inside, his nerves were out of control and his stomach had pulled into a tight knot. So much so that he didnât touch the tray of sandwiches Tanisha had brought to their room.
Lenny, on the other hand, devoured most of the platterâevidently, he ate when he was stressed. But truth be told it was nothing more than him currying favor with Tanisha after his previous slip-up.
Tanishaâs gourmet platter of sandwiches had nothing to do with catering to their every whim. That was a smokescreen to maintain her coverââone can never be too careful,â sheâd said. The real reason she was there was to run them through a safety sequence and to ensure they were well equipped and prepared for any unforeseen incidences at the warehouse.
âRemember, youâre not there to confront anyone. Only to gather intel. Stay out of sight at all times. And if anything does happen, use the safe word,â she said in a stern voice as she secured a tiny microphone to Lennyâs chest.
âSo, are you like a secret agent or something?â Lenny asked her.
Tanisha ignored him.
âIâm just asking because I kinda feel like Iâm being used for bait or something. Microphones, hidden cameras, what if they catch us?â
âThey wonât, as long you donât do anything stupid,â she said, her voice steely.
âBut youâre watching my every move though, right? Whoâs gonna be there for us if things go wrong? Everyoneâs watching and listening, but whoâs got our backs, huh?â
âWeâll be fine, Lenny. Weâre not the FBI trying to bust a drug-smuggling ring. Weâre trying to get Carrie back. Keep that in mind. Weâll find someplace safe to hide, find out whoâs running this meeting and why. Thatâs it. If they have the package, we let Gabriel know and theyâll take it from there,â Adam assured him.
âDo we even know where this warehouse is?â
Tanisha spread a large city map out on the bed and pointed at the red circle to the east of the city.
âHow can you be certain thatâs the right one? There are a million possibilities scattered all over the city.â
âItâs the right one,â Tanisha said.
Lennyâs nerves got the better of him.
âWhat if youâre wrong? Then weâve wasted allââ
âItâs the right one. We donât make mistakes,â she said again.
Lenny raised his arms as if a gun was pointed at him.
âOkay, okay, Iâm just saying. I mean who am I to doubt a secret spy?â
He was intentionally mocking her and she knew it. The look in her eyes told him she wasnât impressed.
Adam, who had been quietly poring over the coded message in that dayâs paper, looked pensive. He had gone through several more backdated newspapers and found further clues. Something nagged at him. Something he just couldnât put his finger on.
âWhat are you so deep in thought over, Preacher?â
Adam didnât answer. His mind was trying to work through the problem.
Tanisha moved to stand next to him, her arms folded at her waist as if she was waiting for him to give her something.
